Uruguay: Uruguay’s President Tabaré Vázquez has announced a number of tax reductions for the agricultural sector, at a meeting between government authorities, rural associations, and agricultural producers at the headquarters of the Ministry of Livestock, Agriculture and Fisheries. Although he was not scheduled to attend the meeting, Vázquez announced a series of support measures, including an 18% discount on Rural Land Contribution tax for owners of less than 1,000 hectares, and an extension of VAT refunds on diesel for livestock breeders. The livestock sector has suffered recently from a water deficit affecting much of north-western Uruguay, which may worsen during the coming winter months. Vázquez declared that these measures “are displays of the government’s desire to address the situation and work with agricultural producers to move forward”. We will provide a more detailed overview of Uruguay’s agricultural sector during our next edition of the Latin American Regional Report: Brazil and Southern Cone, to be published in March.
