Brazil: On 20 February, FS Bioenergia, a joint venture between Brazilian and US-based investors, announced it will build its second corn-based ethanol plant in the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso. Located in the municipality of Sorriso, the plant, which is slated to produce 680m litres of ethanol per year, will require an investment of R$1bn (US$308m) and will generate more than 1,500 direct and indirect jobs. FS Bioenergia is the first ethanol producer in Brazil to use 100% corn in its production. A collaboration between the Brazilian agribusiness Tapajós Participações S/A and the US-based Summit Agricultural Group, the company was created to produce ethanol and coproducts of the cereal in the city of Lucas do Rio Verde, Mato Grosso.
