In brief: Venezuela

Venezuela: Opposition leader Henri Falcón has announced that he has decided to register as a candidate in the 22 April presidential election called by the Venezuelan government led by President Nicolás Maduro. The Mesa de la Unidad Democrática (MUD) main opposition coalition has decided to boycott the early election on the grounds that the Maduro government has not offered it sufficient guarantees that the contest will be free, fair, and transparent. But Falcón, a former Chavista governor who is now a member of the MUD’s Avanzada Progresista (AP) party, has announced that he has decided to register as a candidate with the national electoral council (CNE) to challenge Maduro, who is seeking re-election for the ruling Partido Socialista Unido de Venezuela (PSUV). “We think that it is necessary to participate. In a country where the government has an 80% rejection rate it is possible to win despite all the skulduggery and obstacles”, Falcón said. Falcón is only the third opposition figure to register his candidacy ahead of the deadline set for today (27 February) by the CNE to do so. The other two registered candidacies are those of Reinaldo Quijada, of the previously PSUV-aligned Unidad Política Popular 89 (UPP89) party, and evangelical pastor Javier Bertucci.
