Region: Mixed picture on homicide rates

Perhaps showing his continuing mastery of the controversial sound bite, US President Donald Trump tweeted in early February that Mexico is “now rated the number one most dangerous country in the world”. The claim is wrong (although it is true that violence is definitely rising in Mexico). Measuring violence is a statistically difficult task. It seems reasonably clear however that the homicide rate rose across Latin America and the Caribbean last year, although there was a mixed picture across the region, and some countries clearly became more peaceful.
