PERU: The continuity of Peru’s extractive development model

Peru’s economy mainly depends for its growth on the export of its mineral resources. In 2016, mining accounted for about 60% of the value of Peru’s exports. Policies have been and continue to be implemented which increase the country’s dependency on its extractive sectors – particularly mining. Given concerns about relying on such development models (the impact on the environment and local communities for one), we consider here why such policies continue to be implemented.
