VENEZUELA: The migrant crisis accelerates

Over one million Venezuelans now have left their home country in response to the economic and social crisis there, on latest estimates by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). While over 100,000 Venezuelans have sought asylum in third countries since 2014, more than half did so in 2017 alone, with many others applying for visas and temporary residence permits in countries including Brazil, Peru, Spain and elsewhere. Venezuelans remain the largest group of asylum seekers in the US, accounting for one in every five applicants.
