LatinNews Regional Monitor: Mexico - 05 March 2018

In brief: Mexico

*Salvador Behar, Mexico’s deputy chief negotiator in the North American Free Trade Agreement (Nafta) renegotiations, has said that Mexico must respond in an equivalent manner to proposed US tariff measures announced on 1 March by US President Donald Trump. The new US measures, which would institute new tariffs on the importation of steel and aluminium at a rate of 25% for steel and 10% for aluminium, are an attempt to promote steel production in the US and punish exports from countries such as China. But Behar claims that the proposed tariffs will cause a distortion in the Mexican and Canadian steel markets and warns that Mexico may have take punitive actions and impose tariffs on goods imported from the US.
