Chiapas’s gubernatorial election, opportunity for Morena

Chiapas is one of the nine Mexican states that will elect a new governor concurrently with the general election on 1 July. This gubernatorial election is becoming a competitive race and a key theatre for the national campaigns. Particularly, Chiapas is a key state for the current front runner in the presidential election, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, his party, the leftist Movimiento Reneneración Nacional (Morena), and for the federally ruling Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI) and Partido Verde Ecologista de México (PVEM) coalition.
