US ambassador to Mexico to step down

Mexico: On 1 March the US Ambassador to Mexico, Roberta Jacobson, announced her resignation, effective from May, in a memo to her staff. The memo, which was also posted on Twitter, did not mention her personal reasons for resigning, only citing the need for new opportunities. Jacobson, who has served as ambassador in Mexico since May 2016 and Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs (2012-2015), is the latest in a series of senior officials in the US Department of State to resign from office since the election of US President Donald Trump. No public announcement has been made about a possible replacement for Jacobson in Mexico. The resignation comes at a tense time in US-Mexico relations, both due to the renegotiation of the North American Free Trade Agreement (Nafta), and President Trump’s and Mexico’s President Enrique Peña Nieto’s disagreement about the ‘border wall’ that Trump has proposed to build on the Mexico-US border to stop illegal migration and drug trafficking. Notably, analysts in both Mexico and the US have said that the departure of Jacobson, who has 31 years of experience working in Latin America, will do little to help improve US-Mexico relations.
