In brief: Costa Rica-Nicaragua

Costa Rica/Nicaragua: Costa Rica's foreign ministry has announced that it has received US$378.890.59 from the Nicaraguan government led by President Daniel Ortega. This is in line with a decision last month by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) at The Hague on the latest dispute between Nicaragua and Costa Rica: the two cases concerning the Maritime Delimitation in the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean, and Land Boundary in the Northern Part of Isla Portillos. Among various rulings, the ICJ ordered the Nicaraguan government to pay compensation for material damage caused by its unlawful activities on Costa Rican territory. Both governments had claimed victory, however, given that the amount Nicaragua was ordered to pay in compensation was far short of the claim for US$6.7m demanded by Costa Rica’s President Luis Guillermo Solís back in June 2016.
