NICARAGUA: Nicaragua’s security success and challenges ahead

Central America’s Northern Triangle, comprising El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras, is the most violent region in the world (outside of war zones), an infamous distinction it has held for the past several years – as most recently highlighted by the Geneva-based NGO Small Arms Survey’s latest report, ‘Global Violent Deaths, 2017’. Yet, Nicaragua continues to boast among the lowest homicide rates in the region. Here we consider the reasons for this apparent achievement.
