In brief: Chile

Chile: Chile's President Sebastián Piñera has named Hermes Soto Isla as the new director of the Carabineros militarised police. A former head of the Carabineros in the Santiago metropolitan area, and Bío Bío and Antofagasta regions, Soto takes over from Bruno Villalobos who resigned on 12 March, the day after Piñera and his right-of-centre Chile Vamos coalition took office for a four-year term. Soto inherits an institution in crisis as a result of a major tax fraud scandal which broke last year as well as the botched 'Operación Huracán' case. This involves claims that the Carabineros tampered with evidence from an operation carried out last year in the southern Araucanía area in which eight indigenous Mapuche leaders were arrested.
