Chile’s national parks: Bachelet’s mixed environmental legacy

Michelle Bachelet’s government has now left office, but not before greenlighting a slew of new projects to safeguard Chile’s natural environment. Over the past two months, Bachelet has approved the creation of a chain of new national parks stretching over 4.5 million hectares in Patagonia, along with a swathe of new maritime protection zones. But environmentalists and indigenous people are concerned: the measures fail to protect the waters around the Parque Nacional Kawésqar, leaving them exposed to potentially harmful salmon farming.
