ARGENTINA: Looking to get tough on drug trafficking

The Argentine government has called on Uruguay to cooperate with it to clamp down on the smuggling of illegal drugs across the shared border. The call comes amid reports that the Paraná-Uruguay River international waterway (Hidrovía) is increasingly used as a conduit by drug trafficking organisations (DTOs). This has been attributed to the lack of appropriate policing of the 3,400km waterway that marks the boundaries between Argentina, Uruguay, and Paraguay. The Argentine government is now determined to take decisive steps to address this issue.
