In brief: Mexico

*Italian energy firm Enel has inaugurated its new US$650m ‘Villanueva’ solar power plant in Mexico’s northern Coahuila state. According to Enel, the plant, which boasts 2.3m solar panels and has an installed electricity production capacity of 1,700GWh, is the largest solar power plant in the Americas. The opening of the new plant was hailed by Enel, which noted that this is the first electricity production project to be completed in Mexico following the 2013-2014 energy sector reform that opened up the sector to increased private sector participation. In fact, Enel said that it decided to build the plant after it secured a 15-year contract to supply electricity to Mexico’s federal electricity commission (CFE), made possible under the energy reform.
