Agricultural strikes highlight the plight of Peru’s subsistence farmers

Two people were killed and 30 injured on 1 February, amid clashes between police and farmers engaged in a strike that caused multiple road closures and widespread disruption. The strike was first called on 9 January by potato farmers in 12 regions of Peru, in response to a dramatic fall in prices. An urgent decree issued by the Peruvian government led by President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski on 11 February introduced a range of measures that ended protests in the short term, but a more long-term shift in agricultural policy may be necessary in order to avoid further strikes and secure a better future for Peru’s farming families.
