BOLIVIA | Trade deficit with CAN. For the first time in 17 years, Bolivia has registered a trade deficit with the Andean Community (CAN) trade bloc (comprising Bolivia, Colombia, Peru, and Ecuador). According to a report by the local private sector lobby (IBCE), released at the start of March, in 2017 Bolivia registered a US$174m trade deficit with the CAN, compared with a US$215m trade surplus in 2016. According to the same IBCE figures, Bolivia’s exports to the CAN in 2017 were US$710m, down 32% from US$1.04bn in 2016, while imports were up 8% in 2017 to reach US$884m. According to the IBCE report, soya and its derivates made up 75% of Bolivia’s exports to CAN in 2017, but saw a 30% decrease of volume exported, and a 34% decrease in value, compared with 2016. As regards the different markets, Colombia accounted for 53% of Bolivia’s exports to the CAN, followed by Peru (39%) and Ecuador (8%).
