Venezuela: Switzerland has announced the imposition of economic sanctions against Venezuela for alleged human rights violations, undermining democracy and the rule of law, and repressing civil society. Announced on 28 March, the restrictive measures include an embargo on the sale and exporting of military equipment and other technology that can be used to intercept communications to Venezuela. The measures also freeze the assets of several companies, organisations, and Venezuelan government officials, and prohibits their entry into Switzerland. The seven government officials specifically targeted by the sanctions are Interior & Justice Minister Néstor Luis Reverol Torres; head of the intelligence agency (Sebin) Gustavo Enrique González López; supreme court president, Maikel José Moreno Pérez; vice president of the ruling Partido Socialista Unido de Venezuela (PSUV), Diosdado Cabello Rondón; Attorney General Tarek William Saab Halabi; the president of the national electoral council (CNE), Tibisay Lucena Ramírez; and Antonio José Benavides Torres, chief of the capital district government and the former head of the Bolivarian national guard (GNB). Switzerland joins the European Union and the US in demanding that Venezuela restore a trustworthy electoral and democratic process.
