In brief: Guatemala

Guatemala: Guatemala’s supreme court (CSJ) has rejected a request to strip President Jimmy Morales of his immunity from prosecution so that he may be investigated for his alleged responsibility in the deaths of 41 girls killed in the March 2017 blaze at the ‘Hogar Seguro Virgen de la Asunción’ children’s centre. This followed an order by the constitutional court (CC) to reconsider a previous CSJ order which had rejected the move on the grounds that the accusations – made last year by national deputies Sandra Morán and Leocadio Juracán, both from the small opposition Convergencia party – were false and made with a political agenda. CSJ spokesperson Angel Pineda told reporters that the CSJ’s latest ruling was based on the same grounds – that there was insufficient proof and that the accusations were spurious.
