In brief: Mexico

* Mexico’s economy ministry (SE) has revealed that US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer has called Mexico’s economy minister, Ildefonso Guajardo, and Canada’s foreign minister, Chrystia Freeland, to a meeting in Washington DC today (6 April) to discuss the ongoing renegotiation of the terms of North American Free Trade Agreement (Nafta). Lighthizer has recently said that he believes that the three Nafta member countries could reach a full agreement in principle on new Nafta terms before the start of the Summit of the Americas that will be held in Lima, Peru, from 13-14 April. If so, the agreement in principle could be presented to the US, Mexican, and Canadian heads of state. The call for the unscheduled meeting comes after Lighthizer met with Guajardo in Washington yesterday (5 April) and the speculation is that the two have succeeded in smoothing out some of the significant differences in their respective negotiating positions.
