LatinNews Regional Monitor: Mexico - 9 April 2018

In brief: Mexico

* The three ministers in charge of the renegotiation of the terms of the North American Free Trade Agreement (Nafta) have announced that they have agreed to hold a new negotiating round starting in the US today (9 April). The joint announcement by Mexico’s economy minister, Ildefonso Guajardo, Canada’s foreign minister, Chrystia Freeland, and US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer came after the three ministers held a meeting in Washington DC on 6 April to discuss the progress of the negotiations. Prior to the meting Lighthizer said that he believed that the three countries were close to arriving at an agreement in principle on new Nafta terms and that these could be presented to the US, Mexican, and Canadian heads of state at the 13-14 April Summit of the Americas in Peru. Following the meeting the three ministers failed to confirm that they had reached an agreement in principle but said that they had made significant progress on some outstanding issues and that they had agreed for the respective negotiating teams to hold a new negotiating round in Washington DC this week.
