In brief: Chile

Chile: Latam Express, a domestic airline within Chile, has cancelled over 620 flights between 10 and 16 April and offered to reimburse passengers for their lost tickets. The cancellation of flights follows the announcement by Latam Express’s cabin crew union of protests against the airline’s parent company, Latam Airlines Group, for more rest days and better job security. The union’s president, Silka Seitz, met with Latam representatives on 9 April to ask for a schedule reduction from ten working days and four rest days to six working days and four rest days after a study from the Universidad de Santiago showed a high level of fatigue and burnout in airline employees. Seitz claimed that the union met with Latam representatives multiple times to discuss proposals for a better workplace, but they were always rejected. The union apologised for the inconvenience caused but maintained that a strike was the only way to get Latam to negotiate. The strike will continue indefinitely until Latam considers the union's demands for better schedules and higher salaries.
