‘El Bronco’ permitted to run for Mexican presidency

Development: On 10 April, there was widespread criticism of the decision by Mexico’s electoral court a day earlier to allow Jaime ‘El Bronco’ Rodríguez Calderón to stand as an independent in the presidential elections on 1 July.

Significance: Rodríguez Calderón is not going to win the presidential election but his participation in the contest will take votes away from the current frontrunner, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, of the left-wing Movimiento Regeneración Nacional (Morena) party. The main beneficiary is likely to be José Antonio Meade, the presidential candidate of the federally ruling Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI), which stood alone in welcoming the ruling.
