In brief: Brazil

* Greenpeace says it has new evidence to prove the existence of coral reef 120kms away from Brazil’s northern coast which could affect the rights of French oil company Total to drill there. The results will be published in the scientific journal Frontiers in Marine Science. Currently, Total operates five oil concession blocks in the Foz do Amazonas basin in north-eastern Brazil after winning the exploration rights during a 2013 auction in partnership with Brazil’s state-owned oil company Petrobras and British company BP. For years, their activity in the area has been contested by environmental groups, who are campaigning to get the licence revoked due to the risk of oil spills.
