In brief: Mexico

* Mexico’s economy minister, Ildefonso Guajardo, has said that the negotiating teams from Mexico, the US, and Canada tasked with renegotiating the terms of the North American Free Trade Agreement (Nafta) have succeeded in “practically closing” four more negotiating chapters. Guajardo, the minister in charge of the negotiations in Mexico, said that the three negotiating teams have been holding technical meetings in Washington DC since 9 April to try to advance the renegotiation process and that these have reached new preliminary agreements. According to Guajardo this positive progress could lead to a full agreement in principle being reached “within weeks”. The minister also said that he is scheduled to meet with his US and Canadian counterparts on 19 April to discuss the latest progress in the Nafta talks, at which point new announcements could be made.
