REGION: Mexico and Central America: edging closer in the face of Trump

During the US 2016 presidential campaign and since President Donald Trump’s victory, Mexico and Central American nations, particularly the so-called Northern Triangle (El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras), have been looking northward with some trepidation. Trump’s rhetoric against Mexicans, increasingly directed at Central American states, has forced a rethinking of how to deal with a northern neighbour pursuing a more aggressive migration policy. Mexico has been firmly in Trump’s gaze since his comments about Mexican ‘bad hombres’ invading the US. Initially Central American countries adopted a cautious ‘wait-and-see’ approach rather than coming to Mexico’s defence – no doubt based on concerns about a possible economic downturn if Trump began to focus on them instead, which in turn would lead to growing instability and security issues, and increased migration. However, Trump’s ‘shithole’ comments, cancelling of the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Nicaragua, El Salvador and Haiti, and threats to deport Central Americans from the US have obliged the Northern Triangle presidents to speak out against Trump and seek greater cooperation with Mexico.
