First Chinese-owned company opens. This month Dominican Republic (DR)’s President Danilo Medina announced the opening of the first Chinese-owned company in the DR, Kingtom Aluminium LLC. The DR does not formally recognise China due to its diplomatic relations with Taiwan; nevertheless, on 10 April the new aluminium plant opened in the duty-free industrial zone of Río Sur. The plant is projected to support more than 400 direct employees and over 1,000 indirect employees. China invested RD$530m (US$10.7m) in the project and plans to export mainly to the US and Puerto Rico.
