In brief: Argentina

Argentina: Argentina has exported its first shipment of fresh lemons to the US in 17 years, with the country now set to export between 15,000-20,000 tonnes (t) of lemons annually to the US. In a statement released on 18 April, Argentina’s President Mauricio Macri said that the reopening of this market marked a new era for Argentina's economy, creating new jobs that will tackle poverty: according to government sources, there are 5,300 producers of citrus fruits in Argentina, which generate 91,000 direct jobs. In 2017, Argentina exported 238,000t of fresh lemons, worth US$246m. Annually, Argentina produces 3,28m t of citrus fruits, 70% of which are lemons. As well as Mexico and Brazil, this year Argentina plans to start negotiations with other countries, such as Russia and the United Kingdom, to start exporting lemons there.
