LatinNews Regional Monitor: Mexico - 23 April 2018

In brief: Mexico

* Mexico and the European Union (EU) have reached a new agreement on trade which will allow all exported goods between the regions to be duty-free. The deal will replace the existing 2000 EU-Mexico Global Agreement, and is set to boost the EU agricultural, pharmaceutical, machinery, and transport equipment industries. Within the EU agricultural industry, poultry, cheese, pasta, and pork were singled out as products that will benefit the most from the new agreement, once it is passed. The broader Global Agreement goes beyond trade, however: it will be the first to include provisions and “measures” to tackle corruption in the private and public sectors and will also strengthen the EU and Mexico’s obligations to protect human rights and sustainable development under the 2016 Paris Agreement on climate change. The EU Commission expects the deal to be fully finalised and approved by the end of the year.
