Chile’s new government gets to work

President Sebastián Piñera from the right-wing Chile Vamos coalition has hit the ground running. A month into Piñera’s second term, the Bachelet era now seems like parenthesis between now and his first term (2010-2014). Making good on his electoral promises, Piñera will be prioritising immigration and security reforms over the next two months. Although social issues appear to have taken a backseat, he is under pressure from the opposition not to ignore polarising issues such as abortion and gender rights.
