Germán Vargas Lleras is yet to make any impression on Colombia’s numerous opinion polls (with one exception) with a little over a month to go until presidential elections. And yet week by week he is winning the support of some of the country’s most influential political parties. Vargas Lleras expressed his gratitude to the parties electing to back his candidacy as he seeks to claw in the clear frontrunner in the polls, Iván Duque, of the right-wing Centro Democrático (CD). Vargas Lleras will be conscious that polls cannot capture the full impact of the electoral machinery of organised political parties.
