The China factor

One potentially significant point is that as Latin America’s trade patterns have diversified, so freight transport flows and infrastructure are needing to adapt. Over the last two decades China (and Asia more generally) has emerged as one of the region’s major trading partners (China is now the LAC’s second-most important trade partner after the United States). This has meant that many Latin American economies that previously ‘looked north’ to the United States and northeast to Europe, are now also looking west to China and Asia.
