VENEZUELA: Carrots abandoned as region threatens a bigger stick against Maduro

In refusing to accept the forthcoming presidential election as legitimate, the US and regional leaders gathered in Lima for the Summit of the Americas put heavy rhetorical pressure on Venezuela’s increasingly-autocratic leader Nicolás Maduro, but little else in terms of tangible action. Nonetheless, there are signs that individual countries in the region are gradually readying more concrete steps to push and prod for a democratic transition in Venezuela.
