LatinNews Regional Monitor: Mexico - 10 May 2018

Introduction

As Mexico’s 1 July general election draws closer and with Andrés Manuel López Obrador, the presidential candidate of the leftist opposition Movimiento Regeneración Nacional (Morena) party, appearing to consolidate his lead in voting intention polls, the May edition of the Regional Report: Mexico and Nafta provides an in-depth look into what López Obrador’s political project represents for Mexico. As the campaigning gets into full swing, the policies that López Obrador proposes to espouse, in particular economic policy, are becoming clearer. Although some of his policy proposals have elicited concern, this has not affected his support so far and the question is whether the Mexican electorate now see him as the best choice on offer.
