Can López Obrador deliver growth?

The Mexican economy is one of the twenty largest economies in the world when measured by its output capacity and GDP. In the last twenty years Mexico’s GDP has grown at an average rate of 2.7% but in 2017 it grew by 2%, less than the predicted target of 2.1%, as well as the lowest rate in four years. The growth rate of Mexico’s GDP, while positive, remains underwhelming when compared with other emerging economies like China or India which consistently experience GDP growth rates of over 5%. Recently, the United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America (Eclac) predicted that in 2018, Mexico’s GDP will grow by 2.3%.
