Argentina: During a visit to Washington DC on 8 May, Argentina’s agriculture minister, Luis Miguel Etchevehere, asked his US counterpart, Sonny Perdue, to open a dialogue table on the technical requirements needed for Argentina to resume beef exports to the US. This was Perdue’s first face-to-face meeting with Etchevehere, which the latter described as an amicable encounter. While no guarantees about argentine the beef exports were offered, Etchevehere said Perdue appeared to be open to the idea. “Purdue told us we were in the final stages of approval and we are happy to provide any further details on sanitary requirements,” he said. Although the US already agreed to import Argentine beef again three years ago, regulatory hurdles have prevented this. The centre-right Cambiemos coalition government led by Argentina’s President Mauricio Macri hopes the installation of a dialogue table on the technical requirements could clear up any remaining doubts about the safety of Argentine beef, which was banned by the US in 2001 following an outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease in Argentina.
