MEXICO: Meade takes initiative on security issues

José Antonio Meade, the presidential candidate of Mexico’s ruling Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI), continues to trail in a distant third in voting intention polls ahead of elections on 1 July and knows that he must take the initiative in the remaining weeks of campaigning if he is to have a chance of overtaking his rivals. Meade’s strategy appears to involve presenting an innovative proposal to deal with one of Mexican’s main concerns: how to improve public security. It remains to be seen if his proposal convinces the general public and energises his flagging campaign.
