In brief: Colombia

Colombia: Gustavo Petro, the presidential candidate of the Colombia Humana leftist opposition coalition in Colombia’s 27 May presidential election, has complained that the local authorities are holding a “fraudulent” electoral process akin to that staged in Venezuela on 20 May. Petro is second in voting intention polls behind Iván Duque - the presidential candidate of the right-wing opposition Centro Democrático (CD) party - and looks poised to face Duque in a second round in June. However, Petro has accused the Colombian electoral authorities of seeking to use a dubious vote-counting computer software to rig the electoral results, alleging that the software has not been inspected by any international observers. According to Petro, the electoral authorities would be seeking to ensure that the third-placed centre-right independent presidential candidate, Germán Vargas Lleras, makes it through to the second round ahead of him. Petro’s accusations have been rejected by the electoral authorities, which have pointed out that the European Union (EU) has an electoral observer mission currently present in the country and that they have been given full access to the vote-counting software.
