Marielle Franco assassination shakes Brazil’s troubled democracy

More than two months after the assassination of Marielle Franco, a 38 year-old city councilwoman from Rio de Janeiro, many Brazilians continue to ask: ‘Who killed Marielle?’ On 14 March, Franco and her driver, Anderson Gomes, were shot dead in the central neighbourhood of Estácio Rio de Janeiro, when driving home after taking part in a public debate about empowering black women.
