Piñera’s immigration crackdown targets Haitians and Venezuelans

“Welcome to Chile!” proclaimed newly-re-elected President Sebastián Piñera (2010-2014; March 2018-present) before a crowd of migrants at the Estadio Víctor Jara in Santiago on 23 April. His welcome, however, comes with strings attached. A raft of reforms enacted on 9 April have sought to formalise the circumstances of the estimated one million immigrants currently residing in Chile – a third of whom are undocumented.
