Guatemala: Fresh tensions between Morales and Cicig
In recent weeks the United Nations (UN)-backed anti-impunity commission in Guatemala (Cicig) and attorney general’s office (AG) have revealed the second and third phases of investigations into the conservative ruling Frente de Convergencia Nacional (FCN-Nación) which has once again left President Jimmy Morales on the defensive. The latest allegations of illegal campaign financing have sparked fresh tensions between President Morales – who, following the exposure of the first phase, unsuccessfully sought to expel Cicig’s chief Iván Velásquez from the country – and the UN-backed anti-impunity commission.
