Peruvians clamour for justice over Sodalitium scandal

Pope Francis’ tour of Chile and Peru in January 2018 shone an unwanted spotlight on child abuse allegations levelled against the Catholic Church. While Pope Francis’ failure to denounce a cover-up orchestrated by Chilean priest Juan Barros grabbed headlines across the region, the case of a secretive, ultra-conservative sect known as Sodalitium, which was founded in Peru’s capital, Lima, also came to the fore. Its former leader, Luis Fernando Figari, is accused by a report commissioned by the organisation itself and published in 2017 by two US investigators and an Irish abuse councillor of having sexually abused at least 19 minors and 17 adults between 1975 and 2000. On 10 January, just days before the Pope’s arrival in Peru, the Vatican took steps to take control of the sect by appointing Colombian Bishop Noel Antonio Londoño as its new commissioner.
