Morales declares war on contraband

In his ongoing rhetorical feud with Chile (which stems from Bolivia’s historic claim of access to the Pacific Ocean, lost in the 1879-1883 War of the Pacific), Bolivia’s President Evo Morales has declared that Bolivia’s neighbour “lives off contraband” – and does so in order to damage his country’s economy. “Historically, Chile has never wanted Bolivia to develop economically,” he claimed, clarifying that he was not referring to “the Chilean people” but rather to the country’s “oligarchy”. President Morales’ remarks serve as the latest reminder of the continued challenges facing Bolivia with regard to cracking down on contraband.
