Venezuela: Canada’s Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland has announced that the Canadian government will be imposing new economic sanctions on 14 officials in the Venezuelan government led by President Nicolás Maduro. In a statement Freeland said that the sanctions, which affect high-ranking officials in the legislative, judicial, and executive branches, as well as First Lady Cilia Flores, are in response to the “illegitimate and anti-democratic” early presidential election staged by the Maduro government on 20 May, in which Maduro won re-election until 2025. “These sanctions send a clear message that the Maduro regime’s anti-democratic behaviour has consequences”, Freeland said in her statement. However, the new sanctions have been rejected by the Maduro government, which says that they represent a “violation of international public law”.
