Germany’s largest producer and exporter of small firearms Heckler & Koch (H&K) has been accused of illegally selling thousands of its G36 assault rifles to Mexico between 2006 and 2010. Many of these arms ended up in Mexican states where the sale of firearms is forbidden under German and international law due to the permanent violations of human rights committed there. The investigation into the case even reveals that some of the H&K arms were used by the Mexican security forces in the 2014 mass kidnapping of 43 trainee teachers from Iguala in Guerrero state, one of the most high-profile human rights abuses cases implicating Mexican state actors in recent years.
