In brief: Nicaragua

Nicaragua: US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has announced the imposition of US visa restrictions on “individuals responsible for human rights abuses or undermining democracy in Nicaragua”. This is in response to the ongoing state repression being carried out by the Frente Sandinista de Liberación Nacional (FSLN) administration led by Nicaragua's President Daniel Ortega against anti-government protesters which began on 18 April and has so far resulted in 130 deaths, according to the latest figures from a local NGO Asociación Nicaragüense Pro Derechos Humanos (ANPDH). A US State Department press release says that affected individuals include “National Police officials, municipal government officials, and a Ministry of Health official – specifically those directing or overseeing violence against others exercising their rights of peaceful assembly and freedom of expression”. The US State Department press release states: “We will not publicly identify these individuals due to US visa confidentiality laws, but we are sending a clear message that human rights abusers and those who undermine democracy are not welcome in the United States”.
