In brief: Venezuela

Venezuela: Workers from Venezuela’s state-run electricity sector have called a national strike for today (11 June) in rejection of the latest salary offer from the authorities in charge of running the sector. On 31 May, Electricity Minister Luis Motta Domínguez announced that on 4 June there would be discussions between various trade unions in the sector including the main sector union, Federación de Trabajadores de la Industria Eléctrica de Venezuela (Fetraelec), and state bodies regarding the issue of pay. This declaration came in response to the scheduled electricity workers’ strike which was held on 4 June and which, according to trade unions, registered support of 90% of workers. This first strike was motivated by lack of investment in the sector and alleged corruption. Nonetheless, the outcome of the negotiations, an increased salary offer, was rejected by employees who have called it a ‘joke’ which would not satisfy their minimum economic needs.
