In brief: Argentina

Argentina: Argentina’s agriculture ministry has issued a statement regarding China’s decision to temporarily reduce tariffs on 1,449 consumer products, of which 387 are agricultural. These products are those which China is either a net importer of or does not produce enough of to satisfy domestic demand. The change to the tariff system will come into force from 1 July 2018. The decision was taken in the framework of ongoing negotiations with China’s agriculture ministry and Argentina’s secretariat of agro-industrial markets. In its statement Argentina’s agriculture ministry welcomes China’s decision, stating that it will generate “new opportunities” for the Asian giant to continue growing and that it offers the opportunity to further strengthen trade between the two countries. Argentina’s agriculture minister Luis Miguel Etchevehere also emphasised his confidence in Argentina’s agricultural industry to boost foreign markets and continue creating jobs throughout Argentina. In this sense, he declared, looking towards China as a strategic partner was of “vital importance”. The agriculture ministry press release highlights 43 products which are of particular interest for export to China including fish and dairy products.
