In brief: Uruguay

Uruguay: Uruguay’s foreign minister, Rodolfo Nin Novoa, has met with the Chinese ambassador to Uruguay, Wang Gang, to discuss plans to increase bilateral trade and encourage investment. Officials hailed the excellent bilateral relations between the two nations which date back three decades, as well as revealing plans for joint activities and high-level diplomatic visits. The meeting came just days before Uruguay assumes the temporary presidency of South American trading bloc Southern Common Market (Mercosur) - comprised of Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay, and Paraguay - for the next six months, which it will take over from Paraguay on 18 June. "Mercosur-China rapprochement will be one of the flagship policies”, said Nin Novoa on plans for Uruguay’s upcoming Mercosur presidency. He also outlined plans to promote bilateral cooperation in judicial and criminal matters as well as Uruguay’s incorporation into China’s 'One Belt, One Road' initiative.
