In brief: Nicaragua

Nicaragua: The government led by President Daniel Ortega has agreed to invite a delegation from the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) to investigate the deaths caused by the national police (PNN) and paramilitaries since mid-April as part of a crackdown on anti-government protesters which has left at least 178 people dead on the latest report (16 June) from the local human rights NGO Cenidh. This is in addition to a delegation from the Inter-American Human Rights Commission (IACHR) which is due to announce an interdisciplinary group of independent experts (GIEI) to assist and support the investigation of the violence. The invitation to the OHCHR was one of various conditions set down by the Catholic Episcopal Conference (CEN), which is mediating in talks between the Ortega government and opposition movement Alianza Cívica por la Justicia y la Democracia (which includes students, civil-society groups, and the private sector), for dialogue to resume which is set to take place today (18 June). Other conditions include the CEN’s proposal to bring forward the general election (scheduled for 2021) to March 2019 although the government has yet to formally respond to this demand.
